Spaceballs 2: Brace yourselves, Spaceballs fans: the long-awaited sequel is finally here, and Mel Brooks is officially returning as Yogurt!
Brooks, who co-wrote, directed, and starred in the original 1987 comedy classic (a hilarious parody of Star Wars, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and more), made the exciting announcement on Thursday, June 12, with a cheeky post on X (formerly Twitter). The post read, “I told you we’d be back.” And really? We’re glad we did.
The announcement was accompanied by a hilarious video that mimics the famous Star Wars intro. It begins, “Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy…” and then lists all the spinoffs and sequels that have emerged since then, even poking fun at Marvel movies and Dune. Classic Brooks humor.
At the end of the clip, Brooks himself appears, wearing a sweatshirt that says, “SPACEBALLS THE SWEATSHIRT.” He smiles and says, “After 40 years, we’re wondering what the fans want… but instead, we’re making this movie.” That pretty much sets the tone: expect the same off-kilter comedy fans enjoyed in the original.
Actor Josh Gad, who is joining the cast and helping bring the sequel to life, shared his excitement on Instagram. He joked that he saw Spaceballs before even seeing Star Wars, and that he thought the sci-fi epic was just a remake of the Mel Brooks film! For him, working on this sequel is a dream come true.
Who’s in the cast of Spaceballs 2?
Here’s what we know so far:

What’s the plot?
So far, plot details are being kept under wraps. According to a press release, the film is described (humorously) as:
A sequel without a prequel or reboot, a sequel… with reboot elements, a franchise expansion film.
Translation? Expect something fun, ridiculous, and totally mind-blowing.
To refresh your memory: the original film followed the evil Dark Helmet and President Skroob (played by Brooks) as they attempted to steal the air from a peaceful planet, only to be stopped by the rebel hero Lone Starr, his half-dog sidekick Barf (John Candy), and the feisty Princess Vespa.
Will the sequel live up to the original’s cult status? Time will tell, but with Mel Brooks back at the helm and that signature humor on full display, it already looks promising.
